Rules Are Meant to Be Broken

Welcome to Drop the Needle, a fun and interactive game celebrating the joy of sharing stories explaining why certain songs are directly connected to our personal memories.

While originally created to be played as a fun and spirited game, these game cards can also be used as conversation starters and enjoyed non-competitively. They are great in one-on-one settings — between friends (old or new), time with a sibling, parent or grandparent, or even as a tool for new couples who recently began dating to help learn more about each other. Whether sitting together on a couch or in the car on a long road trip, the ways to truly enjoy these questions are endless.

Before You Begin

  • Please shuffle the deck well.
  • To decide who begins, players share the date of their last live concert. Whomever attended most recently reads first.

To Play as a Game

  1. The first to play reads a question card aloud. Game note: If the question is found to be too emotional or uninteresting, the card reader may discard and re-draw.
  2. After the first card has been read aloud, the other players will have a moment to think about their story responses. Game note: While there is no 'set' amount of time for players to consider their answers, we suggest the reader set a phone timer for between 2 to 4 minutes. During this time, scrolling through your personal playlists or searching online is encouraged and not seen as cheating in any way. As players, you may choose to pass or go last if more time is needed.
  3. Next, after the time to research has elapsed, the players tell their stories in response to the question posed.
  4. The person who reads the card does not answer, but instead listens and chooses the story that 'most resonates' with them, not necessarily 'the best' answer story.
  5. The chosen winner of the round receives one of the small 'plastic record tokens' as a point.
  6. Then, the player to the left draws a new card and repeats the same process.
  7. When the game ends, the player holding the most record tokens is the winner.

Pro Tip

We suggest someone be in charge of making a music streaming platform playlist of all the round-winning songs. Title it with the date and tag all players with #DROPTHENEEDLEGAME so everyone can relive the memories again and again.

Hospitals in cities from coast to coast experience the uplifting impact of MOC's programs, making the organization the nation's leading provider of live music in hospitals. MOC believes that everyone should have access to and benefit from the healing power of live music. It has been demonstrated that music has a direct effect on people and can manage stress, alleviate pain and improve blood pressure, outlook and overall mood.
